Scripting – Writing for the Screen

Yesterday, on the 3rd November 2012 I went along to the British Film Institute @ London Southbank for a Script writing workshop.

This was hosted by a professional scriptwriter who writes for the screen and has experience in Acting and Directing, but her main role is as a writer. This workshop was a great opportunity for me to learn what screenwriting entails, and seek advice from a professional in the field which as a result can give me valuable skills myself which will aid me in my production of my short film.

Brief Intro on Rungano Nyoni

Born in Lusaka, Zambia who moved to South Wales, UK as a child.                                                                                                              She is a BAFTA Nominated director and a previous BAFTA Cymru Award winner. The first film she wrote and directed ‘The List’ went onto win a BAFTA Cymru in 2010 and in that same year she was picked to take part in a New Directors scheme with BBC Wales.

2010 – gained finance from Focus Features Africa First programme and UK Film Council for a short she wrote, directed and produced called Mwansa The Great. << This was shot in Zambia. It was premiered in March 2011 and was awarded 19 prizes. (including The Silver Baobab Award for Best Short Film at Film Africa 2011)

Rungano has experience writing short films, and this woman inspired me because she took us through many exercises on how to develop our story to develop a script. I have taken some of her advice in my own script development and will consider her techniques which will produce an effective script.

I am the one within the group who took the lead in developing the script to make it as effective as possible. The script which I will create will leave a strong emotional impact upon the audience and they will be left thinking about the story line of my film, they will begin to question their life and if they appreciate life. That is the purpose of a short film, it can make you laugh, angry and even upset. But there’s a difference when a short film makes you question yourself and makes you think that you need to change like how I will do.

Well, next I will very soon before I start my filming ladies and gentlemen be publishing my script for my Short Film called

Life’s Value – But this is the working title! 😀

Take care and see you sooooon!!!

  1. This is so impressive – attending a course on script writing. Try to add a bit about the specific issues of screen writing for a film short. Also show how you have to set out a film script in contrast to a play
