Film Genre

We have come across Genre in terms of film language right throughout A-level when discussing film. All films are produced within a genre.

Genre:  “a category of things distinguished by some common characteristic or quality”- Free Online Dictonary

Through this definition, a genre of a film can be described as such because its a category of different types of films distinguished by some common charateristics. In the media, we would use that as typical conventions in genre.

A film can either follow the typical conventions of a genre or it can break conventions, which might make it more interesting. A Short Film in particular breaks conventions and has a twist at the end which will make the narrative structure of the film strange, for example: If there’s a film about Love and Romance, and someone despreatly is in love – an idea which might break these conventions is
